WRITING A STATEMENT ABOUT YOUR WORK
Statements are
professional documents. They are used to inform people about your work in
different situations: exhibition information / catalogue; publicity / press
releases; further study / job applications; funding applications, etc. You may
need different versions for different purposes.
A statement should
include what is important about the work, giving background information to the
work - what may not be apparent to a viewer - and which enriches the experience
of that work. Asking yourself these questions may help:
aims - how
are you interpreting the subject of jewellery?
is
there a specific purpose or intention?
what
specific ideas are you exploring?
how
are you expanding or focussing these ideas?
research/sources/influences what was your starting
point?
what
has prompted you to work in this way?
has
anything or anybody influenced you strongly?
what
are you looking at / thinking / reading about to inform the work?
how
are you interpreting / combining areas of research?
materials/processes/techniques what is important
about your choice?
how
does it relate to the ideas?
relationship to body/ person what do your pieces do when
worn?
how
do they feel / move / fit etc?
do
they perform a function?
resolution do
the pieces have something special to convey?
how
do pieces/ images constitute a body of work?
is
the context of the work important or particular in some way?
where
do you see the work fitting in / being shown / used etc?
anything else that you feel is important
These prompts are
a guideline, they can be used in any order as appropriate
Avoid a
straightforward description
Avoid a "and
then" narrative
Avoid an account
of technical details or problems you have encountered
Always read it out
aloud to yourself or to others to check it makes sense before you finalise it.
