ItemThe Persistence of Craft
After decades of deliberation it has become obvious what the crafts are. In late modern culture, the crafts are a consortium of genre in the visual arts, genres that make sense collectively for artistic, economic and institutional reasons. There are not hard and fast rules about the genres implies by the word craft . Things change. The genres cover here include ceramics, glass, textiles, furniture, woodworking, jewellery and metalwork. In this collection of essays, artists, historians and philosophers from around the world discuss some of the most important issues surrounding the crafts at this time, and in so doing, they suggest where these practices are headed. The issues include: Post-modernism; tradition; individualism; new technology; ethnicity; domesticity; gender; technology; cosmopolitanism; populism; the avant-garde; the role of the museums, and the literature of craft.
All these topics reveal one over-arching concern: the function of the crafts within modernist culture. On the contemporary scene, a great number of significant works are being made each year in al media, and all media are simultaneously gaining scope and ambition. The underlying cultural postion of the crafts, however, remains a tense and unresolved issue. In this beautifully illustrated volume, Paul Greenhalgh and his fellow writers address many of the complex issues confronting this vital area of visual culture. Collectively they explore practice in many nations, they set the scene as to what has already been accomplished, and they look forward to what the future might bring.
